Speculations about Elvis's fate surfaced as far back as 1979. That year, the country and western singer, Waylon Jennings recorded a song with lyrics that indicated, 'Elvis, may still be alive.' This simple melody, raised hopes, queries, and fuelled rumours, starting a heated debated that has become the brunt of many jokes. Today, Waylon adamantly refutes the 'still alive' theory.

Dummar who saw Hughes alone in highway claimed that days after Hughes' death, a "mysterious man" appeared at his gas station. He left an envelope containing the will on his desk. Now knowing if the will was genuine, and unsure of what to do, Dummar left the will at the LDS Church office. In a trial which went for seven months, the Mormon Will was eventually rejected by the Nevada court in June 1978 as a forgery.
