Your vision is not what you think. You only see in high resolution and color for a small part of your visual field.  Here's a simulation of what you see in one of the 5 or 7 fixations per second that your eye makes.

Note the 37 undifferentiated menu items in the left nav.  The user hated using this menu and get trying to accomplish their mission with the main body copy.

Stomper Scrutinizer is a web browser with a built in simulation of human vision, as pictured at the beginning of the trail.

Providing displays of sufficient quality to emulate reality is a challenge. One technique is to spend rendering CPU on the area in focus, and degrade peripheral rendering.

The Scrutinizer visual simulation is informed by work in this area.
