you can't stumble onto other marks unless the trailfire sidebar is open. and even then, if they're not in a conspicuous place, they're easy to miss.

how long of a list are people willing to scroll through? if you're skimming, something like 5-10 entries? i suppose in-depth people will be down for skimming long trails, but i can't imagine someone reading everything in this, not that they have to.
i can't right-click to mark a page. google notebook lets you highlight, then right-click and save an entry, but isn't very robust for commenting (and differentiating comments from content).

and the new york times page is updated constantly. i imagine there isn't a huge risk of this not working

people don't seem to be using this as a trail, telling a story. it seems to be used more like a collection of bookmarks. many also seem to not move a mark's pin to point to the relevant part of the page

this is a good example of bookmarking. if you read the descriptions and notice that all of the links are homepages instead of articles.
