Spinocerebellar ataxia is a neurodegenerative disease. It is associated with mutation of the DNA repair enzyme tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterase 1 (TDP1). It's been shown that oxidative damage and ionizing radiation lead to a pronounced defect in the repair of chromosomal single-strand breaks leading to progressive cerebellar atrophy.
