About this trail:
Project Celebrity still seems to be one of their policies, since the Scientologists recently opened a Celebrity Center in California allegedly for the purpose of attracting Hollywood personalities. Last year it was claimed that the following celebrities were Scientologists: Tennessee Williams, Leonard Cohen, Mama Cass Elliot, Stephen Boyd, Jim Morrison, William Burroughs and possibly the Beatles. One famous, in fact infamous person interested in Scientology that they do not boast about, talk about, or probably even want is Charles Manson, the convicted murderer of Sharon Tate and her friends. Scientology, which boasts of being the only major new church to emerge in the 20th century, claims millions of members around the world. And it counts among them a stable of Hollywood stars, from Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, and John Travolta to Jeffrey Tambor and Jenna Elfman. But critics contend that the church is, as The New York Times put it in a recent investigative report, little more than "a cult and money machine intended to bilk the faithful." And for some actors who have been in Katselas's class, any hint of Scientology is too much to bear.

And now, the next Walt Disney Studios--- the Church of Scientology! That is, if enterpreneurs connected with the Hollywood based cult can muscle into the film business with their proposal to homogenize films by tailoring them to the tastes of the unwashed masses. It all began last jJuly, when Future Films, a new, eccentric studio, began running ads in Variety and the Hollywood Reporter touting its revolutionary ideas. No one knew what to make of it all.

Scientologists deny that the church manipulates celebrities. They also refute the suspicions of outsiders about the manner in which Scientology members ``audit'' others with E-meters as they strive to rid themselves of ``body thetans'' so that they can become ``clear.'' ``We don't use celebrities; celebrities are serviced,'' insists Marty Rathbun, director of the Religious Technology Center of the Church. ``They are important people because they reach a lot of people. They set trends in society.

Celebrity Centres work with artists and others whose broad visions for social enhancement are essential for the positive progression of society. Twelve Celebrity Centre churches exist in the world’s cultural centers, including New York, Paris, Vienna, London and Nashville. Their purpose derives from L. Ron Hubbard’s 1951 statement: “A culture is only as great as its dreams, and its dreams are dreamed by artists.”
