The computational horsepower required to run the latest version of the "life simulator" series -- "The Sims 2" -- would crush most laptops. Enter the "Life Stories" series, which takes a step back in features and graphics to make it possible for "Sims" fans to take their addiction on the road. This trimmed-down version requires the player to guide successfully the lives of Riley, a poor young woman, and Vince, a rich young man, who are looking for love in virtual places. Unfortunately, you have to complete Riley's 12-chapter story to unlock Vince's. That may make some male gamers feel a little awkward. Although "Life Stories" is a perfect introduction to the full Sims experience, veteran players likely will find the linear aspect of the plotlines too limiting.

Life Stories is all about socializing, but in a very streamlined, user-friendly way. There are keyboard shortcuts for just about everything. And the game even runs in a window so you can use other programs – AIM, e-mail, internet porn sites – in tandem with it. In short, it’s an entry-level Sims game for those of us who find the series too open-ended or boring.
