Keep three points in mind when putting together a survival kit. First, make it small enough that you'll actually carry it and not leave it home. Second, use the list as a guide and customize it to your needs. Thirdly, bring enough to enable you to spend at least one night out.

Your survival kit need not be elaborate. You need only functional items that will meet your needs and a case to hold your items, also select items that you can use for more than one purpose...lots more hints here. Quite informative in general.
