Alain Locke is considered to be one of the most important figures in the Harlem Renaissance movement. Locke's anthology, The New Negro, is considered to have sparked the renaissance movement. Locke also helped pave the way for African American authors as well. After viewing this site, you should be able to explain why critics were forced to take black writing seriously.
