In 1917 there was a Zionist movement to restore Israel back to the Jews, although it has been inhabited by Arabs for over a thousand years. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 was granted to Britain as a League of Nations mandate and it was written up to make a home for the Jews. Grand Mufti Hajj Amin El Husseini, the leader of the Arabs in Palestine, created friction between the Jews and Arabs by revolting.
