About this trail:
So there we were at the Red Drum, a tableful of beers a few that is and all the gangs cutting in and out, paying a dollar quarter at the door, the little hip-pretending weasel there taking tickets, Paddy Cordavan floating in as prophesied (a big tall blond brakeman type subterranean from Eastern Washington cowboy-looking in jeans coming in to a wild generation party all smoky and mad and I yelled, "Paddy Cordavan?" and "Yeah?" and he'd come over)

The Subterraneans is a 1958 novel by Beat Generation author Jack Kerouac. It is a semi-fictional account of his short romance with an African American woman named Alene Lee in New York in 1953.

A forum for the discussion of Kerouac's work, life (though the two often intertwine), associates, prose style, dreams etc. Critical thinking applied to his work is welcome as are comments on his enduring influence. Kerouac spotters - where have you heard, seen or encountered references to Kerouac or his oeuvre? All things Kerouacian.

. The book largely concerns duality in Kerouac's life and ideals, examining the relationship that the outdoors, mountaineering, hiking and hitchhiking through the West have with his "city life" of jazz clubs, poetry readings, and drunken parties.

Jack Kerouac's great Beat novel, a charming, honest and poignant story of a friendship and four trips across America, is in my opinion the best piece of writing to come out of the Beat Generation.
