The trail begins here with TRW1 Question. How has the war on terrorism since 9/11/01 affected the values of tolerance and freedom in your country and community? What impact do you see in your personal life?
(For example, has it changed who your friends are? Do your parents react differently to what you can do? Has your government established new policies or laws? Do you see an economic impact? In general, do you believe people feel differently about tolerance and freedom in your country and community?)

Reading President Bush's September 20, 2001 speech in April of 2007 makes me wonder about the actual outcome of the "fight" he talks about. He said: "This is not, however, just America's fight.  And what is at stake is not just America's freedom.  This is the world's fight.  This is civilization's fight.  This is the fight of all who believe in progress and pluralism, tolerance and freedom."  Has the US involvement in the Middle East (and all over the world, for that matter) led to greater tolerance and freedom? I don't think so. Just look at the loss of personal freedom experienced by so many citizens and visitors to the US since the Homeland Security Act.

There is a bitter irony in the fact that Bush's claim of protecting pluralism, tolerance and freedom has led to human rights violations. There is something fundamentally wrong in how our government is violating human rights in the name of protecting freedom.

Reading this NY Times artile from 8/3/02 makes me wonder how our nation can behave in such intolerant and secretive ways!  How can we feel there is freedom and tolerance when our own US Justice Department made over one thousand secret arrests and detentions of individuals in the United States after September 11th. Who was targeted? Mostly non-U.S. citizens from the Middle East and South Asia were placed in secret custody. I'm sorry, Mr. Bush. I believe the laws of our nation apply to all who are on our land, not only card-carrying US citizens.

The American Civil Liberties Union memo highlights the problems with the Patriot Act. I'm interested in creating a survey that would document post 9/11 personal experiences.  I wonder how many people surveyed will actually have experineced intolerance and even civil rights abuses?
