Appearances -- TRW2

A trail of 5 pages, marked with comments, by mbrownstone
About this trail:
Looking for The Richness Within (TRW)

Each of the six TRW trails will persue answers to a question posed by a high school class. There are six questions in all.
Vist the Richness Within Blog.  Feel free to leave a comment.
This trail starts  with the TRW2 Question: How does our appearance determine our place in society?
For example you might start by asking and answering some preliminary questions such as: When is Dress important? When is language or speech (such as regional or foreign accent, use of slang, profanity, etc.) important? In what situations are physical attributes (such as weight, body shape, height, nose, lips, eyes, physical handicap, appearance of illness or wellness, etc.) important?

Suggestions for further inquiry: I might document cases where children of immigrant families have to “act” one way in school and “act” another way at home.
Starting with a book on Amazon: There's a passage on indentity conflicts and appearances in a book listed on Amazon. But how do I know? Well, I learned a little trick about finding hidden informationon the Web. Have you ever searched inside a book on Amazon? It's a kind of peculiar way to read a book, downright post-modern. You can bounce from topic to topic, or shall I say "key phrase" to key phrase?
HOW TO READ A BOOK ON AMAZON:
  • If the book on Amazon has the feature: Search Inside, you can actually read every page--not necessarily in order. :-)
  • Mouse over the book and you will see a pop-up with a search box. Type American Dream in the search box
  • click: GO.
  • Click on the link "from Back Matter"
  • Read the section titled:  "The Parent Child Relationship"
  • To turn the page, click the white wedge to either side of the page.
