Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Jan.15 ,1929 in Atlanta,Georgia as Michael Luther King Jr. (had his first name changed).When he was 15 he graduated from high school and he received the B. A. degree from Morehouse College. While attending Boston University he met Coretta Scott and later on married her. Dr. Martin Luther King was also a pastor at Deter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. was the leader of the civil rights movement. This man was known for the way he used non-vilonit action to boycott,just like another famous man Gandhi. which isn't usually being that Martin Luther did studied Gandhi's techniques.

The year was 1951 when a class action was filed against the Bord of Education of Topeka, Kansas. There were 13 parents that wanted there 20 children to become enrolled in the closest school, sadly all the school were white schools. The name of the plaintiff was Oliver L. Brown. Oliver was the father of Linda Brown a 3rd grader, who attend Monroe Elementary her segregated black school. The main problem for the court was that Linda had to walk six blocks to her bus stop. That was not only the problem for Linda. Monroe was one mile from Linda home while Sumner Elementary a white school was only 7 blocks away.

Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland of 1908. His father tough him to appreciate the American Constitution as a young boy. After High school he went to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Later on in 1930 he filed an application to the Howard University Law School, but just before he applied to the University of Maryland and was denied because of his color. In 1933 Thurgood Marshall won his first case after successfully suing the University of Maryland to denying a young man of color in to the university. This young African American was Donald Gaines Murry. Later on Mr. Marshall became known as the Chief Counsel for the NAACP ( National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). Soon Thurgood Marshall was well known, so President John F. Kennedy appointed Mr. Marshall to the U.S Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Thurgood Marshall was a good example that no mater were your from, you can achieve anything you want.

Betty Goldstein was a good mother, housewife, and a great freelance writer. She married a man known as Carl Friedan. Betty studied, and graduated from Smith College. After discovering that many of her college class mates were unhappy with there lives she began doing research which led her to write The Feminine Mystique which was written in 1963. Mrs. Friedan help found the National Organization for Women, (also known as NOW), in 1966. Betty became a leader of the campaign for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

During the struggle for equal rights for women NOW was founded. The National Organization for Women was founded on June the 30th, 1966. It was founded by 28 women and men at the 3rd National Conference of the Commission on the Status of Women. But in 1966 Conference delegates weren't allowed to pass the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and enforce its legal use to stop gender discrimination. Betty Friedan was one of the founders of NOW and so was Pauli Murry. Pauli Murry was the first black women to be an Episcopal priest. In the mist of the 1970's the National Organization for Women promoted the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution. The Equal Rights Amendment was approved by 28 of the states and it was passed.
