The LearnLab is an NSF funded Science of Learning Center funded at 25 million dollars over 5 years. It is an outgrowth of research on thinking, problem solving, artificial intelligence, and intelligent tutoring systems that traces its roots back through Kurt Van Lehn, Ken Koedinger, John R. Anderson, Allen Newell, and Herbert Simon.

Kurt's 2007 Summer School presentation provides a good overview of the PSLC's approach.

The PSLC defines robust learning as the outcome that they care most about.

Robust learning is learning that is retained over the long term, transfers to novel situations, or accelerates future learning.

This exposes their bias against many educational research studies whose post-test measures typically give no indication of the robustness of the learning.
8
PSLC researchers define robust learning as the dependent variable and instruction, prior learning, and other concepts as the independent variables.

Here, Kurt elucidates what he considers to be the primary dimensions of instruction.

Every summer Carnegie Mellon invites people to come on campus for a week for a hands-on workshop with researchers.

I attended a previous incarnation offered under the PSLC precursor called CIRCLE. It was a great experience. I highly recommend it!

Everyone is invited to apply to attend, though it looks like the 2008 deadlines just passed.

They have an awesome seminar series where they get the who's who of cognitive science / instructional technology / educational research to present. I've asked them to podcast the presentations and hope that someday they do.
