The purpose of the project is to help students learn how to read maps, teach them geography terms, and make them aware of their surroundings.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp; This project is certainly educational. I found it quite interesting as a third grade teacher since I am required to teach this concept. Students definitely need to know how to read a map and understand key terms related to maps. The project is also mentally stimulating because students have to answer questions related to maps. According to the <U><FONT COLOR="#0000FF">USGS</FONT></U>&nbsp; the average American uses between 80-100 gallons of water per day.&nbsp; What if we could collect data on water usage from people around the world and compare that to others and try to determine what one might do to use less water.</P><P>&nbsp;</P><P>The second online project is &quot;Down the Drain.&quot; This is a project in which students determine how much water they use on a daily basis. Students also predict if students in other countries use less or more water than they do. Students then collaborate with students in another country to determine how much water is used on a daily basis.<BR><BR>&nbsp;&nbsp; This project is educational because students are dealing with math and geography. The project is interesting since most people do not realize how much water they actually use. The Human Genetics Project is an Internet-based project with three main activities. These activities will help students to understand the &quot;true miracle&quot; of life and with schools around the world identify observable human traits, develop a very large amount of data and discover how combinations of dominant and recessive genes are part of this miracle. This project will be stimulating to students because it is a hands on experiment where students get to get a sample of water from a pond and identify the organisms they find. They will then get to look at other places that are not near them which will intrigue them and it will incorporate map skills as they will learn where all of the places are that are participating in the project. Students will be learning on a global level rather than a local level which will broaden their horizons they will be able to look at things that are outside of their own world. Students will also learn the differences and similarities of organisms in ponds all over the world which in turn will introduce them to more organisms. It allows students to follow the process that Eratosethenes did to calculate the Earth&#39;s circumference. Everyday at 10 minutes to noon, the class goes out and uses a meter stick vertical to the ground and measures the shadow and angle to the sun. The measurements are done every two minutes so that the highest point of the sun can be found. This is where the shadow is the smallest. The students must measure the length of the shadow and angle of the meter stick and sun. Two schools work together and share the data of where they live to calculate how far apart they are and then the data is used to calculate the circumference of the Earth. This project is for students ages 6 – 12. Using their ePals accounts students will converse with other students globally and basically take a survey of likes, dislikes, interests, and hobbies. This lesson is significant in that students learn first hand about people abroad and not form a textbook. Even though social studies were always one of my favorite subjects, many students are not enthusiastic about it. Using email will not only help language arts development but by connecting with counterparts across the globe, will help students learn similarities and differences shared.
