It is an outgrowth of research on thinking, <A HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem_solving">problem solving</A>, artificial intelligence, and intelligent tutoring systems that traces its roots back through <A HREF="http://www.pitt.edu/%7Evanlehn/">Kurt Van Lehn</A>, <A HREF="http://pact.cs.cmu.edu/koedinger.html">Ken Koedinger</A>, <A HREF="http://act-r.psy.cmu.edu/people/ja/">John R.
