A journeyman in his early career, Alexander Frei led the Swiss at Euro 2004 after a prolific season with his French club Rennes, his fifth professional club after spells at Basle, Thun, Luzern and Servette. But the tournament was spoiled for himself and his team when he was suspended for spitting at England's Steven Gerrard in Switzerland's 3-0 group defeat. It was a shame the tournament ended so inauspiciously for Frei after his five goals in qualifying were instrumental in helping the side finish tops in a tough group.

Birdwatching is the very best kind of fun: easy, inexpensive, healthful and satisfying. Taking a page from Henry David Thoreau, we consider any day wasted that we don't go for a walk and enjoy nature. Birdwatching Dot Com is about wild birds and the sport of birding. It's for everyone who's interested in birdwatching and enjoying nature.

Knight is one of NCAA Division I college basketball's most controversial coaches because of his behavior. He has thrown a chair across the court during a game, been arrested for physical assault, and has repeatedly displayed a combative nature during his encounters with members of the press. However, he is simultaneously commended for running clean programs (no Knight program has ever been sanctioned by the NCAA for recruiting violations) and his high percentage of graduating players

The braille system was based on a method of communication originally developed by Charles Barbier in response to Napoleon's demand for a code that soldiers could use to communicate silently and without light at night called night writing. Barbier's system was too complex for soldiers to learn, and was rejected by the military; in 1821 he visited the National Institute for the Blind in Paris, France, where he met Louis Braille. Braille identified the major failing of the code, which was that the human finger could not encompass the whole symbol without moving, and so could not move rapidly from one symbol to another. His modification was to use a 6 dot cell — the braille system — which revolutionized written communication for the blind.

Camping is a web framework which consistently stays at less than 4kb of code. You can probably view the complete source code on a single page. But, you know, it‘s so small that, if you think about it, what can it really do? The idea here is to store a complete fledgling web application in a single file like many small CGIs. But to organize it as a Model-View-Controller application like Rails does. You can then easily move it to Rails once you‘ve got it going.

If you think your house is plagued with flies this year, consider this: If a pair of houseflies began mating on the first day of summer and every member of every generation of offspring survived and reproduced at the maximum rate, the resulting fly population would cover the Earth three feet deep by the first day of fall!

As legend has it, the evolution of karate began over a thousand years ago, possibly as early as the fifth century BC when Bodhidharma arrived in Shaolin-si (small forest temple), China from India and taught Zen Buddhism. He also introduced a systematized set of exercises designed to strengthen the mind and body, exercises which allegedly marked the beginning of the Shaolin style of temple boxing. Bodhidharma's teachings later became the basis for the majority of Chinese martial arts. In truth, the origins of karate appear to be somewhat obscure and little is known about the early development of karate until it appeared in Okinawa.

Igor Stravinsky is often considered something of a revolutionary, in part based on the riotous reception of his ballet The Rite of Spring. Stravinsky's career, however, suggests more evolution than revolution. Perhaps no other composer in this century -- or any -- has written in such a variety of styles. And it is the unique genius of Stravinsky that his musical personality is detectable in each of these styles

Submarines are incredible pieces of technology. Not so long ago, a naval force worked entirely above the water; with the addition of the submarine to the standard naval arsenal, the world below the surface became a battleground as well. The adaptations and inventions that allow sailors to not only fight a battle, but also live for months or even years underwater are some of the most brilliant developments in military history.

Volleyball, like basketball, is a sport whose origin is known almost to the day. Oddly enough, both sports were invented at the same college and within a few years of one another. Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a student at Springfield College and a director of the YMCA at Holyoke, Massachusetts. The game was originally called "Mintonette

Philosophers often link the concept of optimism with the name of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, who held that we live in the best of all possible worlds, or that God created a physical universe that applies the laws of physics, a theodicy which Voltaire famously mocked in his satirical novel Candide. The philosophical pessimism of, for instance, Arthur Schopenhauer, provides an opposite pole to philosophical optimism

Philosophical pessimism describes a tendency to believe that life has a negative value, or that this world is as bad as it could possibly be. In particular, it most famously describes the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. Schopenhauer's pessimism comes from his elevating of Will above reason as the mainspring of human thought and behavior.

For the uninitiated: Prince of Persia was a smash hit when it was released in 1990, and is today still regarded as one of the best games ever made. The combination of fluid, lifelike animations, great Arabian-Night storyline, and devious physical traps and puzzles made it a revolutionary game for the time, and very challenging even to expert gamers. The tortuous difficulty level of this fanmade version makes it a perfect game for those who finished the original game and are looking for a real challenge to save the princess
