But the tournament was spoiled for himself and his team when he was suspended for spitting at England's Steven Gerrard in Switzerland's 3-0 group defeat. Frei is relatively small for a striker, but a published comment from opponent David Terrier sums up Frei’s deceptive talent: “When you mark Frei, you pass a relatively easy evening,” Terrier said. “You could even say that it’s fun looking after him. But at the end of the match, you suddenly see that you’ve lost 2-0 and he scored them both.”
