About this trail:
My personal favorite flavor.  Debian at its heart, with a strong GUI, regular updates, and an incredible update network.  Recently they began supporting a server as well as the usual workstation/desktop version.  I run it on a laptop quite nicely and on my video server.

If you want a GUI get the desktop version then apt-get the server meta package.  The other way around doesn't work as well.

I recently resurected an old laptop which had died under the burden of Vista, by installing Ubuntu.  But I'm a sucker for eye candy and Bery has some of the best and useful UI effects around.

This Mac-like/Expose'-like window finder is great.

Gnome's multiple desktops is even more useful with this wizzy way to get to them quickly.
