My personal favorite flavor. Debian at its heart, with a strong GUI, regular updates, and an incredible update network. Recently they began supporting a server as well as the usual workstation/desktop version. I run it on a laptop quite nicely and on my video server.

If you want a GUI get the desktop version then apt-get the server meta package. The other way around doesn't work as well.

I recently resurected an old laptop which had died under the burden of Vista, by installing Ubuntu. But I'm a sucker for eye candy and Bery has some of the best and useful UI effects around.
This Mac-like/Expose'-like window finder is great.

Gnome's multiple desktops is even more useful with this wizzy way to get to them quickly.

Here is some more eye candy. Don't bother with cairo-dock, kxdocker, or hdesklets dock. This is the one.
