This trails dlives into the Beryl UI subsystem's settings.  Beryl is available for weveral operating systems.  I have it installed under Ubuntu beta 7.04.  The first topic is the reason that might get you to look at Beryl and linux if the eye candy doesn't.  And that is the worspace manager and the skydome viewport cube.
How often have you piled up too many windows on your laptop and wished that you could group them together and hid or show them all at once?  Beryl has a typically sexy way to do this with the skydome.  here are its settings, I'll get to a screenshot in a minute.

Turning you Linux Desktop into a Mac.  I've got a couple old laptops that could use a facelift.  This should give them a new lease on life even though they can't run Vista.

To cut to the answer. The easiest way to use your MacBook as an X-Windows terminal is to use the supplied X11.app. Run the terminal-xterm then enter the following.
ssh -X your-linux-username@linux-host-name.domain-name
now run any X11 program.

My personal favorite flavor.  Debian at its heart, with a strong GUI, regular updates, and an incredible update network.  Recently they began supporting a server as well as the usual workstation/desktop version.  I run it on a laptop quite nicely and on my video server.

You can go the Bootcamp route to getting Windows on your Macbook or you can install parallels and run Windows under OS X.  With the soon to next release of Parallels the choice is easy-Parallels.  Run applications in their own separate window on the OS X desktop or run in full screen mode.  It even works with Vista.  First buy and install Parallels from here.  But follow the trail there is more.
