Today marks the release of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. One brand new feature of gutsy is that tracker, a desktop indexer like google dektop, runs by default. Tracker also supports taxonomy for your files and folders but this feature is not yet integrated into gnome. But wait…you can have it anyway in a few simple steps:

  1. Install python-nautilus package:
  2. sudo aptitude install python-nautilus

  3. Download “Tags-Tab”-Extension and move it to .nautilus/python-extensions (you may have to creat this folder)
  4. Restart Nautilus:
Alt+F2 and type in killall nautilus
Now you can start tagging files and folders. Simply right-click on the item you want to tag, go to the “Tag”-tap and insert your tags.tagging1.png
  5. Setup Searchfolders
In order to have your tagged items on your hand when ever you need them, simply go to nautilus click on the search button and type:
    tag:[tagname]
    Then go to File->Save search… tagging2.png

Voila, now you can start reorganizing your desktop with tags. I “implemented” some sort of GTD-System with a “next”-tag for files I want to work on in the next days.

Update 29.10.07: User k20878 notes that if this did not work for you, you should try to make both the .py and .pyc files in the
extensions directory executable.

Discussion of the economics of goods when scarcity is removed. "The wonderful feature of a non-scarce, or infinite, good that it is effectively a free resource. Once created, it costs nothing to give to someone else, and you still retain the original. In fact, economists have finally realized that this is the very key to economic growth and progress. The infinite resource known as an "idea" that improves what was already there is what increases the size of a market. Or, putting it another way, that infinite resource of a new idea makes an existing scarce resource more valuable. It's easy to understand that when it's an idea applied to, say, a machine making it more productive -- but it also applies to any infinite resource appropriately bundled with any scarce resource."

I have started using Gmail as much more than an email host. With its gobs of storage, speed and tremendous search/tagging capabilities, you can transform it into a personal nerve center that's available from any computer or mobile device. When you tap into this power and combine Gmail with some other tools, it is perhaps the most essential site ever developed. Most of the following life hacks have not been documented.

This series has several parts...

  • How to turn Gmail into a massive personal database (Gmail + the Google Toolbar)
  • How to get real-time news updates in Gmail (Gmail+ Google Talk + Twitter)
  • How to automatically store your bookmarks in Gmail (Gmail + del.icio.us + Yahoo Alerts)
  • How to manage Calendar and To-Dos in Gmail (Gmail + Backpack + GCal +  GTalk + iMified)
  • How to blog from Gmail (Gmail + Wordpress/TypePad/Blogger + IMified)

The latest version of the Google Toolbar has a send to Gmail function. Select some text or graphics, right click on it and send it to Gmail.  The Toolbar then automatically feeds it into a new message.

Now, when I find something I want to save I use this feature and send it to a secret  contact in my address book. This is basically a [my username]+[secret phrase]@gmail.com email address (Lifehacker explains the value of these here).

Once the article arrives in my Gmail inbox, I have a filter whisk it a way into the archive and tag it with an @Database label. Further, I am toying with having the same filter also forward these to a premium  Google Apps account that has 10 gigs of space. Now all I need to do to call it up later is enter label:@Database and a keyword. Whammo - an instant personal database.

Following on from the success of the Google Summer of Code program, Google is pleased to announce this new effort to get young people involved in open source development. We've teamed up with the open source projects listed here to give student contestants the opportunity to learn more about and contribute to all aspects of open source software development, from writing code and documentation to preparing training materials and conducting user experience research.

If you're a student age 13 or older who has not yet begun university studies, we'd love to see you help out these projects. In return, you'll learn more about all aspects of developing software - not just programming - and you'll be eligible to win cash prizes and the all important t-shirt! You will, of course, need your parent or guardian's permission to participate where applicable.

Firefox with Greasemonkey: The Enhance Gmail Greasemonkey script incorporates Google Calendar and the Google Chat gadget directly into your Gmail account. Install it, then click the Calendar or Chat links at the top of the page to open your inline calendar or chat gadget. If you don't like the default setup of the inline layouts, you can edit the script and change a few simple values to get it looking nice (like the screenshot above, which also features Remember the Milk integration).

For example, to place the calendar on the bottom half of your window (which I prefer) rather than splitting the window vertically, open up the Greasemonkey script and edit this line in the top section, changing:

const OPEN_CAL_BELOW_MAIL=0;
...to...
const OPEN_CAL_BELOW_MAIL=1;
Likewise, I adjusted the Calendar height using:
const CAL_HT = 60;
...rather than 70 percent, which seemed to take up too much of the window. In all, though, this is a really great tool for more tightly integrating your Google Apps dashboard. Enhance Gmail is free, works with Greasemonkey and Firefox. Perhaps we'll see some Better Gmail integration in Enhance Gmail's future. Thanks Redd!

Unlike books, newspapers, journals, etc. that have a permanent written record, web pages do not have a written record. Currently, people such as journalists, academics, bloggers, researchers, students, and others do not have a simple and consistent way to link to a web page as it was when they wrote their article, report, research study, academic paper, etc. If the web page that you quote or referenced changes afterwards, you will waste time trying to reconstruct the original web page and your credibility may be questioned. Use CLICK! by snapshot.jkn.com to put the web on dry ice and never be frightened of change again.

At the core of Google’s phone efforts is an operating system for mobile phones that will be based on open-source Linux software, according to industry executives familiar with the project.

In addition, Google is expected to develop mobile versions of its applications that go well beyond the mobile search and map software it offers today. Those applications may include a Web browser to run on cellphones.

While Google has built phone prototypes to test its software and show off its technology to manufacturers, the company is not likely to make the phones itself, according to analysts.

In short, Google is not creating a gadget to rival the iPhone, but rather creating software that will be an alternative to Windows Mobile from Microsoft and other operating systems, which are built into phones sold by many manufacturers. And unlike Microsoft, Google is not expected to charge phone makers a licensing fee for the software.

UNetbootin allows for the installation of Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSuse, Arch Linux, or Debian to a real partition, so it's no different from a standard install, only it has the advantage that it needs no CD. This is meant for people who want to install Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSuse, Arch Linux, or Debian but don't have a CD-R to burn, lack a CD writer, or they want to install on a computer that doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, like an ultra-portable laptop.

UNetbootin uses a Windows or Linux-based installer to install a small modification to the bootloader (grldr and boot.ini for NT-based systems, grub.exe and config.sys for Win9x, or grub on Linux), uses the bootloader to boot the netboot initrd and kernel, then uses that to download and install Ubuntu directly from the internet, no CD required. After Linux is installed, the modification to the bootloader is then undone.

Requirements

  • Linux, or Microsoft Windows 95-XP (Vista support is in the works, though a temporary workaround can be found in the "Known Issues" section at the bottom of this page)
  • A broadband internet connection (dial-up will take way too long to download)
  • 3GB or more of spare hard drive space to install Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSuse, Arch Linux, or Debian in

Installation Instructions

HowtoForge has a guide for installing Ubuntu or Fedora using UNetbootin.

Before installing, remember to back up all your data, in case you do something wrong in the partitioning stage of the installer.

  1. Download the appropriate file for the distro and version you want to install; if using Windows, use the exe files, if using Ubuntu, Debian, or a deb-based distro, use the deb files, if using Fedora, Suse, or an rpm-based distro, use the rpm file, if using another Linux distribution, use the sh (self extracting) files: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=198821
  2. If using Windows, run the file, and click "OK" to reboot.

Perens' principles

See Open Source Definition for the exact operational definition and examples of licenses that satisfy, and do not satisfy, those principles.

Under Perens' definition, open source describes a broad general type of software license that makes source code available to the general public with relaxed or non-existent copyright restrictions. The principles at stated say absolutely nothing about trademark or patent use and require absolutely no cooperation to ensure that any common audit or release regime applies to any derived works. It is an explicit "feature" of open source that it may put no restrictions on either the use nor redistribution nor the organization or user whatsoever.

It forbids, in principle, to guarantee continued access to derived works even by the major original contributors. In contrast to free software or open content licenses, which are often confused with open source but have much more rigorous rules and conventions, open source deliberately errs in favour of allowing any use by any party whatsoever, and offers few or no means or recourses to prevent a free rider situation or deal with proliferation of bad copies that misled end users.

Perhaps because of this flexibility, which facilitates large commercial users and vendors, the most successful applications of open source have been in consortium. These use other means such as trademarks to control bad copies and require specific performance guarantees from consortium members to assure re-integration of improvements. Accordingly they do not need potentially conflicting clauses in licenses.

The loose definition has led to a proliferation of licenses that can claim to be open source but which would not satisfy the share alike provision that free software and open content licenses require. A very common license, the Creative Commons CC-by-nc-sa, requires a commercial user to acquire a separate license for for-profit use. This is explicitly against the open source principles, as it discriminates against a type of use or user. However, the requirement imposed by free software to reliably redistribute derived works, does not violate these principles. Accordingly, free software and consortium licenses are a type of open source, but open content isn't insofar as it allows such restrictions. Similar arguments have often been made about the GFDL used in Wikipedia:itself.

Why is it so bad for an application to write its settings to the user profile folder? Writing settings to the application folder is dangerous because you need to have admin rights on the machine and different users are stuck with each other's settings! Storing settings in the user profile folder also has the advantage that you could upgrade a program without losing its settings.

In a multi-user environment, it is indeed inappropriate to write settings in the application folder. However, portable apps are run from external USB flash drives or equivalent, so it is a personal device and writing settings to the application folder is therefore preferred. In addition, the admin rights requirement is no longer a concern since you have full access to the USB drive.

An application can cater to both multi-user environment and portability by checking with the user on startup (when it detects that the settings are not initialized yet) whether he wishes to write settings to the user profile folder or application folder. This should be relatively easy to implement, and makes no assumption on the user's preference. Underlying this mechanism is to check for a file eg. settings.ini in the application folder on startup. If the file exists, it write its settings to the application folder, otherwise to the user profile folder.

With regards to the issue of upgrading an application without losing its settings, you could just as easily upgrade a portable app without losing settings by avoiding the appropriate file(s). Some well-designed apps like Portable Firefox even has a explicit profile folder that you simply leave alone when copying over the new application files. This also has the added advantage of being able to easily maintain several versions of the same application, each with its own settings.

My touchpad was driving me crazy; every time I tried to edit a document in Ubuntu Linux, my cursor kept jumping around like a grasshopper. There is a Multiverse application called Touchpad by GSynaptics which will let you change your touchpad settings or disable it. Just click Applications>Add/Remove, then type Touchpad into the search box. Oh, and make sure you have the "All Available" drop menu option set too. Check the box and click Apply. After the application installs, you will see it in your System>Preferences>Touchpad. There is one more thing you will now have to do (oddly, most applications don't require this sort of editing procedure). Open the Terminal, and type in
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Enter your admin password, then scroll down the file that opens up until you see
Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier    "Synaptics Touchpad"
This is where you will want to add:
    Option          "SHMConfig"             "true"
Click "Save" and then exit. Reboot, and now you should be able to disable/enable your touchpad with ease.

In computing, virtualization is a broad term that refers to the abstraction of computer resources. One useful definition is "a technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications, or end users interact with those resources. This includes making a single physical resource (such as a server, an operating system, an application, or storage device) appear to function as multiple logical resources; or it can include making multiple physical resources (such as storage devices or servers) appear as a single logical resource."[1] It can also include making one physical resource to appear, with somewhat different characteristics, as one logical resource.

Why Use Widgetbox?

Track your widget with your metrics dashboard.
Each widget has an analytics dashboard that tracks key metrics like # people who have subscribed to your widget, where your widget is being used, # page views, and which subscriptions are driving other people to get subscriptions themselves. Learn more »
We help people easily add your widgets to their favorite destinations.
We make it as simple as possible for people to get the widget onto their site. Already people can install onto many popular destinations without copying and pasting code. And, if they already have installed a Widgetbox Panel, adding your widget is drag and drop on many sites via our widget panels.
We worry about each widget customization for you.

Microsoft Excel 2007 Calculation Issue

Update

Microsoft has now posted a hotfix package to its Web site that corrects this flaw in Excel 2007 and Excel Services 2007. The fix will be offered soon through Microsoft Update so that users can get the patch automatically without having to go to Microsoft's site.

In late September 2007, Microsoft confirmed that there is floating point issue involving calculations of numbers around 65,535 in Excel 2007. The first reported example of the error in Excel 2007 was that the formula =77.1 * 850 would return the value of 100,000 instead of the correct answer of 65,535. Other calculations have since been identified that also create the error. The issue only exists in Excel 2007, not previous versions

This one click option gives you a clear advantage over the traditional way of doing it - downloading the doc/xls/ppt file from the internet, saving it to your desktop & then launching a desktop application to open it.

The extension works for .doc, .rtf, .sxw, .odt for documents, .xls, .csv, .sxc for spreadsheets & .ppt, .pps, .sxi for presentation. The files get opened using Zoho Writer for document files, Zoho Sheet for spreadsheets & Zoho Show for presentations.
