While most of the debate in Washington concerning the S-Chip funding legislation is the conflict over the cutting of the popular Medicare HMO program to provide partial financing, Florida Congressmen have an additional worry.

Cigar making is big business in the Tampa Bay area. Ybor City, located in downtown Tampa, is an extremely popular destination full of rich history.. in cigar manfacturing.

Some are surmising the increased tobacco tax that is proposed to additionally fund S-Chip will increase the price of a Cigar to $10. A 2000% increase. So while on its face a tobacco tax doesn't seem like a bad idea. It very well could be a bad outcome for 1,500 or so cigar-makers in Tampa and several thousand more statewide with a heavy concentration in Miami.

House passes S-Chip legislation. Vote splits along party lines. 50 Billion additional dollars paid for by additional taxes on tobacco and cutting Medicare HMO funding, which Republicans (and I) don't like.
